This black sand has three special properties. It is blacker than any other concrete aggregate, it has an extremely high density, and it is ferromagnetic. At around 5 kg/l, the specific density of the material is more than twice that of conventional sand or gravel. Due to its special properties, this sand is suitable for unusual applications. These include concrete objects that require particularly high stability, such as paperweights or parasol stands, and objects to which magnets are attached, such as a magnetic pin board or magnetic pin cushion. Due to its uncompromising black colour, magnetite concrete is also used for special markings in car crash tests.
