With this material, it is possible to carve concrete objects from the block without expending considerable effort or having to use machines. It also does not create dust and makes no noise. The technique of craving out from the freshly poured concrete block is called wet carving.
The unique formulation of SKULPTIN® was developed by Sven Backstein and optimised so that the fine-grained material quickly solidifies after mixing and pouring, and then very slowly becomes harder and finally reaches a high strength after several weeks. It is thus possible for the workpiece to be effortlessly processed for up to two days using light scratch tools.
SKULPTIN® has the following advantages over sculpting with the popular YTONG stones:
SKULPTIN® is not porous like YTONG.
SKULPTIN® is much softer than YTONG during processing.
SKULPTIN® does not produce dust like YTONG, as it is processed wet.
SKULPTIN® is a lot harder than YTONG after curing.
SKULPTIN® can be poured into blanks of any shape.
SKULPTIN® is weatherproof.
SKULPTIN® is frostproof.
SKULPTIN® can be coloured and marbled as desired.
SKULPTIN® can be polished and glazed.
Up to 20 g of colour pigments can be added per kg of dry matter and up to 20 g of mica. The blank cast from SKULPTIN® becomes solid in about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature, and can then be removed from the mould and processed. This time can be shortened by using hot water for preparation. The concrete has cured after 2 to 3 weeks and it can then be exposed to all weather conditions.
